Most classes are done in rotations and cost $2-$3 per student unless noted otherwise (activities and meals for sponsors and bus drivers are free). The group as a whole is broken up into two to six smaller groups or groups of 10-15. These groups will rotate through the different activities chosen. Classes normally run about 45 minutes, but can run from half an hour to two hours each depending on your schedule. Classes are updated annually.
Map and Compass ($2)
Students will learn basic compass, step length distance measuring, and map reading skills. These skills will then be put to the test as students navigate their way through the woods on our orientation course.
Fishing ($3)
Students will learn how to cast and reel by our expert anglers. This class covers knot tying, common lures and bait, identification of Nebraska fish, and basic fishing technique.
Tree Identification & Usage ($2)
Students will participate in a variety of different activities exploring and learning about Nebraska timber. Activities will include tree identification, tree anatomy, tree growth rings, and life zones. Each student will experience a hands-on search for a particular variety by use of a data sheet.
Water Ecology ($2)
Students will discover the ecological aspects of the lake at Covenant Cedars through observation. Also, students will look at the relationships between plants, animals, and their environments. Different water environments will also be explored.
Basic First Aid ($2)
Students will learn basic first aid principles and techniques to use in the wilderness. There will be an emphasis on the topics of practical skills, decision making, and dealing with environmental conditions. Content includes patient assessment, shock, wound management, burns, fractures/sprains, and first aid kits.
Teacher’s Class Choice
Many times a teacher or a parent will have an area of expertise that they would like to share with the students. If this is the case, we would love to work it into our activity
rotation.
