Most
classes are done in rotations and cost $2-$3 per student unless noted
otherwise (activities for sponsors and bus drivers are free). The group
as a whole is broken up into two to six smaller groups or groups of
10-15. These groups will rotate through the different activities
chosen. Classes normally run about 45 minutes, but can run from half an
hour to two hours each depending on your schedule. Classes are updated
annually.
Map and Compass ($2)
Students
will learn basic compass, step length distance measuring, and map
reading skills. These skills will then be put to the test as students
navigate their way through the woods on our orientation course.
Fishing ($3)
Students
will learn how to cast and reel by our expert anglers. This class
covers knot tying, common lures and bait, identification of Nebraska
fish, and basic fishing technique.
Tree Identification & Usage ($2)
Students
will participate in a variety of different activities exploring and
learning about Nebraska timber. Activities will include tree
identification, tree anatomy, tree growth rings, and life zones. Each
student will experience a hands-on search for a particular variety by
use of a data sheet.
Water Ecology ($2)
Students
will discover the ecological aspects of the lake at Covenant Cedars
through observation. Also, students will look at the relationships
between plants, animals, and their environments. Different water
environments will also be explored.
Basic First Aid ($2)
Students
will learn basic first aid principles and techniques to use in the
wilderness. There will be an emphasis on the topics of practical
skills, decision making, and dealing with environmental conditions.
Content includes patient assessment, shock, wound management, burns,
fractures/sprains, and first aid kits.
GPS Geocaching ($3)
Students
will learn the fundamental uses of a handheld Global Positioning
Satellite unit (GPS). This includes the basics of waypoint setting,
maps, point to point directions, and route tracking. They will also
experience a geocaching treasure hunt.
